Fields of Peace: A Pennsylvania German Album by George Tice, Fields Of Peace unites two remarkable talents in one masterful volume. The text, written by the late Millen Brand, illuminates the history of the Pennsylvania German sects who were united in their rejection of infant baptism. He provides a sympathetic portrait of these fascinating people (often erroneously called "Pennsylvania Dutch") who emigrated from Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, found a home in Pennsylvania, and settled primarily in and around Lancaster County. Primarily Amish and Mennonites, these are quiet and modest people whose lives of determined simplicity seem totally anomalous in modern America. The photographs by George Tice are some of the most compelling documentary imagery ever framed. In their unobtrusive vision, they capture the substance and the spirit of these self-reliant people. They also reflect over 30 years of efforts to document their lives and record their customs. For Tice, this has been a life work, and the breadth and generosity of his vision is manifest on every page. First published in 1970 and here entirely reset with 39 new images added and every photograph reshot for duotone reproduction (as well as a new foreword by Sue Bender and a new afterword by Tice), this is not a "revised edition" but an entirely new book, one that will surely take its place among the classic documentary works of this century.
Cuisine of the Pennsylvania Dutch - Pennsylvania Dutch cuisine is the typical and traditional fare of the Pennsylvania Dutch, and it has had a considerable influence on the areas in which they originally settled, Central and Southeastern Pennsylvania, as well as the neighboring areas that they have migrated to over time. Though its base strongly reflects their German heritage, it has developed into a distinctly different cuisine over the centuries that they have lived in America; it also manifests their simple, largely agricultural lifestyles, the resources made ... Pennsylvania Dutch Country - Pennsylvania Dutch Country refers to an area of southeastern Pennsylvania that has a high percentage of Amish, Mennonite and "Fancy Dutch" inhabitants and where the Pennsylvania German language was historically common. The term was used in the middle of the 20th century as a description of a region with a distinctive Pennsylvania Dutch culture, but in recent decades the composition of the population is changing and the phrase is used more now in a tourism context than any other. Pennsylvania Dutch - The Pennsylvania Dutch (perhaps more strictly Pennsylvania Deitsch or Pennsylvanian German) are descendants of German speaking immigrants who came to Pennsylvania before 1800. Pennsylvania Dutch were historically speakers of the Pennsylvania German language. Pennsylvania Dutch Candies - Pennsylvania Dutch Candies, a candy company owned by parent group The Warrell Corporation, has a manufacturing plant located in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania. They make candies such as Sanded Candy Drops (see picture), chocolate-covered pretzels, nuts, and dried fruits, and peanut brittle.
